Every now and then I get a piece of wood that is special. This was one of them. My tree surgeon told me he had this piece of ash, which he couldn’t use as firewood because it wouldn’t split, and asked if I wanted it. Well, let me tell you, the reason it wouldn’t split was that it had a tremendous amount of curling and quilting going on. The piece was so thick that I cut it into two blanks and made two very beautiful dishes.
I used various colours to emphasize the action in the grain: yellow, orange, red and blue (which now looks green, because of the final yellow wash on top). The lacquer gives this piece a nice gloss, and it is sure to bring life to your display cabinet.
